How can rusty iron filings cure viruses in developing nations? We decided to take a look at how a group of Illinois students used simple science to improve a low-cost-low-tech water filter already saving lives around the world.

If the systems are as effective as they seem, worldwide scalability of the concept could help provide clean drinking water to millions.

As NASA Stalls on Mars, China and Russia Test the Waters

As NASA's Mars rover stalls out on Mars, China and Russia proceed with their own plans to undertake a joint mission to Mars. China's space program, rapidly growing over the past several decades, signed an official partnership with Russian Prime Minister Vladamir Putin in 2009. Now, in 2011 they make good on their pact and will launch a Chinese designed satellite into orbit around Mars in late 2011.
